1. How do I customize Foxdie?
- There are 3 way to access the customization page:
- a. Click on the Foxdie icon on the lower left corver of the status bar
- b. Tools –> Foxdie for Firefox –> Customize
- c. Bookmark chrome://foxdie/content/web/index.html
- Refresh the page then you will have it displayed, this is a bug we just haven’t found out the reason yet.
- I’ve redesigned this dark theme twice on Firefox 3.6.*, but it breaks the balance of this themes pack and burdens me more and more, if I keep the full dark one, it will turn to be a dead end for Foxdie 4 especially when I’m trying add Aero Glass and Tab on Top supports on version 4. So… I have to say that the half-dark one is the only solution for now…
- Well, this is a Firefox 4 feature, but you can simply get the BACK square as other buttons like this: Right click on toolbar–>Customize…–>Use Small icons
- Right clicking or holding down the left mouse button on the back / forward buttons will make the history sub-menus appear.
- No. A changelog would only slow down my development of Foxdie.
- Check out this blog post: What is the difference between the Blue and Graphite versions of Foxdie?
- Download the Lucida Grande font, turn on ClearType to make the font clearer, and install Gdi++ to make the font smooth.
- Firefox is not able to change that, but a 3rd party Windows program like Visual Style or WindowBlinds can. You can always find more at deviantART. For instance, here is a link showing you how to get some AMAZING stuff. Linux users can use Mac4Lin on Gnome. It really looks like a real Mac (Thanks Cicero!). I have upgraded my Firefox to 3.5.2 and installed Foxdie again with Chrome Edit, but button theme Leo1 and toolbar theme Firegray do not work after i have edited userChrome.css. I have no idea how to fix it.

I’m just wondering if there’s any way you can allow users to use Personas together with Foxdie? Because I absolutely love how neat and organised Foxdie is but I also like the idea of changing the look of the browser using Personas. Any chance at all? I’ve tried using both together but only the bottom bar and the tabs bar change according to the skin I chose from Personas.

Personas assumes that the default theme is used and hack it, so when you change to a 3rd-party theme, problems come out. This is Personas’ issue, and it need to change the way it works in future.

I was using firefox 3.0.13 in windows and I installed one of your themes ( the blue and the graphite). When I restarted I had no toolbars at all and the status bar at the bottom of the screen was gone too! The ONLY thing I could see was the tab bar. Is this how it should look? If so, how do I control anything? The only thing I could do is switch between tabs! Nothing I did reveled any of the toolbars or any other type of controlling menu.
The only way I reestablished the bars (File toolbar, navigation bar, bookmark bar, etc.) was to use Google (thankfully I had that as my home page) to get to Firefox and download and install Firefox 3.5! (I noticed your theme didn’t work with 3.5.) Installation was a problem to because I could not see the SAVE button or the INSTALL buttons on the popups but I hit ENTER assuming the option was highlighted and it worked. Once 3.5 installed I could see all the toolbars again and I could write this e-mail.
In 3.5 I quickly uninstalled your themes and restarted, but I still have the “Foxdie for Firefox” menu item under the TOOLS menu. Selecting it gives me a flyout menu that is totally grayed out except for the Restart and the About Foxdie items.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is this the way your themes are supposed to work? (If so, how does the user navigate?)
2) How do I get rid of the “Foxdie for Firefox” menu item under the TOOLS menu?
HELP!!

I disabled foxdie themes on Mozilla website, because the current version 3.1.9.2 causes a serious bug in FF3, I’ve just fixed it and optimized it for FF3, but need more time to make some changes to the Extension, once it’s finished(should be on Oct 23), I’ll upload it again and enable it.

how do i get the book icon located just under the direction buttons (in my setup i have compact menu in that space, but in your screenshots you have the book icon like in safari).

For ivawart… The book icon is a drag from the customize menu.. Right click on the toolbar and select customize.. Then simply drag the book icon to the bookmarks toolbar… Hope this helps..

The thing is I don’t really use the bookmarks button (to open the bookmarks in the sidebar) whereas I do use the compact menu to access other functions, plus I prefer the book icon to the apple one, so yes to answer your question I do want the book icon in place of the apple icon.
For me that would make your skin the best out there!

I’m kind of in agreement with ivawart. I use the Compact Menu 2 extension and don’t want it to use the Apple icon. Personally, I don’t really want the book icon either, though: I’d just prefer to have the standard Compact Menu 2 globe icon. Is there any way you get your theme to just use the existing icon? Compact Menu 2 actually has an option to use a custom icon, so if you just left it in charge, people could have whatever icon they wanted for the menu.

I have to report the “Findbar” entry in Foxdie’s customization menu is grayed out me, do I need some extra extension or is it not implemented yet? (Firefox 3.5.4 on Snow Leo 10.6.1)
Also I would like to suggest an option to increase the height of the bookmarks toolbar, something like the Statusbar wider/widest setting but applying to to the bookmarks bar.
Another thing you may want to consider is implementing standard toolbar button icon sizes, what I mean is what you consider “large” or “small” icon sizes are completely different to standard sizes, this results in most third party toolbar icons (added by extensions like Stylish, Session Manager, etc.) having a mismatched size with the rest of the buttons, generally appearing smaller than the standard icons.

I use foxdie on my computer and LOVE IT but my girlfriend uninstalled it the proper way (add-ons, foxdie, uninstall) but the menu items are still there. I reinstalled firefox but this fix did not help either. Ideas for a fix?
Also is there a time frame for when foxdie 3.5 will be released? Everyone’s holding their breath.

2. Selected; Tools, Add-ons, Themes,
3. Reselected “Default 3.5.5″
Suggestion:
It seems that only some people are having the problem of the foxdie theme remaining after the uninstall. Change the directions for uninstalling to include ‘reapply the default theme before uninstalling foxdie’.

Hello- I’m new to the Foxdie world (I downloaded it about 20 minutes ago…). What I was looking for was the previews in a new tab, like Safari has. You know- when you click a new tab and it pulls up a screen shot of your most visited sites and you can click and go from there without typing it into the address bar. Is there something available through Foxdie? I’m thinkin I simply overlooked it.

The size of (Snow) Leopard style is hard to handle when there are so many extensions buttons, so my advice is that when you are using Leo1-3, please switch to small icons mode, then those extensions buttons won’t be resized much

Foxdie 3.5 was designed to work with a plug-in in last year, but I changed the plan to make it as an extension this year. Because of too many styles in 3.5, I have to find a better way to make it easy enough for most users to use, I know I’ve said “it’s finished” before, but I changed it again and again, I’m sorry for this…
And now, The themes part is finished except for the colorful part, I think it needs a better way to config instead of the current extension in version 3.1.9, that’s why I delayed it. I told people “soon” because I do think it’s soon, but I’m afraid it takes more than what I thought.
I’ll release it when I finish the colorful part and a new foxdie.us site, I got 2 friends working on the site right now
Oh, It seems like Firefox 3.6 will come out next month, if it’s true, then I’ll upgrade Foxdie to 3.6 once I release 3.5

I have very small fonts on website if I use System style font (can’t to make it larger). And I can’t use Smaller/Bigger/Biggest font because russian tab titles and bookmarks look really agly (right letters look but it’s of big size and intervals between them). Is there a way fix it in settings or something?

Bugger won’t uninstall. Foxdie has taken over FF 3.5 so much so that I can’t change ANY themes, and every time I open FF, I get asked if I want to set it as my default browser (which it has been for 3 years!!!)
This is the only extension/theme I have changed since these symptoms have occured.

To remove the remnants of foxdie on Windows XP: after having uninstalled foxdie from Tools>Options>Extensions>Themes (or, in your sidebar), then go to My Computer>C: drive>Docs & Settings>Application Data>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles>Extensions. Find the folder that says foxdie and delete it. All the leftovers will be gone when you start Firefox the next time. (Make sure you check the Folder Options box in order to view hidden folders).

I have recently upgraded to your latest theme for Firefox3.5 and almost everything is perfect. The one problem I am having is that my bookmarks won’t show up in the top bar (above the tabs). They ARE all there – if I open the sidebar, but I can’t get them showing up in the top. This means that the compact menu icon is on the extreme RIGHT of the browser window and not on the left. I assume this is because it does not see any of the bookmarks in the top bar??
Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Yeah I got that but for some reason the little home icon doesn’t show up, it just sais home but no icon. It works fine on my desktop but not on my netbook. It’s not that big a deal, just a little annoying.

The latest stable version (Foxdie 3.5.2) is incompatible with Firefox 3.6.

Are you trying to get rid of that gray border around the window? You probably already know that your WindowsBlinds theme that is causing that, right? I doubt John can make Foxdie override WindowsBlinds, so I think the only way to get rid of it is to revert the default theme or use a different theme.

No actually I was asking for a way to change the background for the toolbar (under the URL bar) but I figured it out. If you look at the screenshot the background is now brushed metal as opposed to being just gray, to match the Windowblinds theme. Unfortunately it looks best with the night layout but that’s ok, the border doesn’t bother me.

i really like the whole details customization concept. but to be complete you should be able to customize the scroll bar.
i don’t have a mac, so the big blue bar on the left really messes with the final look of the browser. thats the reason why i never used mac themes on firefox.
are you planning to add a customization screen for the scroll bar too?

Well it took me awhile and a few tries but I finally got it to match up perfectly. Here it is, the finished product:

BTW I am running this on an HP Mini 1000 Netbook with Windows XP and it looks really good on this little screen. The reason I chose this eamon63 Windowblinds theme is because it was the closest I could find to being an authentic looking Mac 10.4 Tiger theme. I like the brushed look and it seems pretty believable sitting next to my Mac iBook with the same Aqua theme.
After all that work, as small a detail as it was, I really do appreciate your dedication to the Foxdie world you have created here John. I love this theme even more now. THANK YOU!

Hi, I used to use this theme a lot ’cause it’s cool, way cooler than the others and I found out that whenever I open a new tab or even browse in the first/default/starter tab, the page sometimes starts to… VIBRATE… I am using the latest stable version of Firefox right now… 3.5 i suppose ’cause it updates all by itself… it shakes like hell, the page… as though there is a kind of special effect in the script but there isn’t because once I uninstalled your theme, it worked fine… now I got an ugly interface with which I couldn’t deal with because FF doesn’t let you customize the interface without an add on and I’ve installed it again… ‘CAUSE IT’S COOL!
Your theme is, like, elite but your FAQ does really suck… well, please solve the problem…
And, if the page starts to shake and I open a new tab and go back to that shaking page and close the new tab, it stops… was it on purpose or is it a bug?

I was also wondering what happened to the “muku” theme if I can remember correctly (I think it was like a wood texture). Is it also possible you can revive and probably remix that theme? Favicons are TOO WIDELY SPACED look at the add-on Smart Bookmarks Bar it has a better veiw and more options but simply for me the Favicons waste a lot of space between themselves and could be a half or quarter the distance at least. This is a space saver option but does a poor job due to the size of the gap. Otherwise I love this Add-on works awesome but please could you update this feature.

Adding them back is a hard job.
Firefox 4 will do the same as what I’m doing to these buttons right now, they put every button icon into a button background, and keep the icon small. Those buttons like Camino and Rhino etc will break this balance, and it’s hard to deal with other extensions.
So I’m not sure at this time…

Hello John, I’m so glad that you finally were able to release Foxdie 3.6; however, I’m unable to customize it at this time. For your information I don’t show a tool option under the tools drop-down menu in FF, nor do I see the Foxdie icon at the button right hand side of the status bar. I’m using FF 3.6.4, could the use of the latest FF version prevent me from customizing Foxdie 3.6? Anyway, I’m glad to see you back strongly holding the Foxdie ball once aging.

I’ve been using your theme on my Ubuntu laptop with no problem (using firefox 3.5 with foxdie graphite version 3.1.9.3). I installed it (version 3.6.1) today in Firefox 3.6.3 and I am unable to change the button style(s). I was wondering if this will be fixed in a later version or if its some sort of weird PEBCAK issue.

I think i’ve found a bug, it’s only visible when i’m using the Speed Dial add-on. I’m using Windows 7 if it makes any difference. On the Speed Dial page, there is a white or light grey border, only a couple of mm wide down each side of the page, it’s noticable when using a dark background on the Speed Dial page, it makes no difference if the status bar is there or not either. Maybe I should mention too that this problem wasn’t there with a previous theme i was using, just to make it clear that it isn’t an issue with the Speed Dial extension. Also, it is more noticable when the page isn’t maximized as my Win7 VS is black too. – Thanks again John.

Because of the issue i mentioned previously, i thought i’d try another extension similar to Speed Dial – this one is called Foxtab.. Basically the same thing happens, except the white/grey line is only on the left side of the page now. Thought i’d just let you know John – only because your theme is awesome, so i’m hoping you’ll sort this out soon, because regardless of this issue it won’t put me off using your theme!

Hello John, sorry for my delay in replying.
To make the Speed Dial background a different color – Right click on an empty part of the speed dial page (either side of the dials), then select ‘edit group’, then select ‘use custom colors’. Also, you can select ‘additional style options’ to use a custom ‘backround image’.

In your screenshot you have ‘dial groups’ enabled on Speed Dial, so it’s normal that way. When ‘dial groups’ is disabled the white border lines shouldn’t be there. To disable dial groups – right click an empty space on the Speed Dial page, then select ‘Speed Dial Options’ then UNCHECK ‘Enable dial groups’ from the ‘Main’ tab of the options menu. The Speed Dial page with ‘dial groups’ disabled should look like this —

I just upgraded from firefox 3.5 (I had been holding off on upgrading *just* because I liked using your theme so much). Now that’s it for compliments because you screwed the pouch on this version – you got rid of everything I was using in the theme! I mean… it was perfect… and now you have like 1/4 of the options that you had for it before.

Just in case you thought it was just random craziness I will now point out the bad parts…
1.There’s now an inexplicable ridge where the tab bar begins…
2. My bookmarks toolbar and tabs are a completely different color and look awful.
3. There’s no options for changing the main area behind the location bar and menus.
4. You only have 5 buttons instead of the much better selection you had before.
5. There also seems to be no more option for widening the status bar – which is necessary for someone like myself who has lots of extensions that I access from that area.

4. No, there are more than 25 combination, much more than any older versions. What have to be removed is Danish, Mail, Leo2, Leo3, Rhino. Why? The reason is very complicated.
5. Which else theme gives you an option to widen it? The height of new status bar depends on what you put into it, haven’t you found that yet?

Hi John. I just downloaded 3.6.3. Great work; I love the options. My only question is, is there an easy way to remove the blue “folder” icon on my bookmark toolbar folders? There is a blue folder on the left of the folder name, then a triangle drop marker on the right. I’d prefer just the drop marker. I think this is how it used to be on a much earlier version. Anyway, the folder just takes up space. I’m on Win7 x64, FF 3.6.8.

How about you force it to “use small icons” always when I move the icons to the menu bar, cuz many other themes do it this way. And sometimes i prefer combining menu bar and nagivagion toobar to save space.

I doubt that other themes can force it to “use small icons” when icons are put to menu bar, because themes can’t do this unless they use extensions.
In Foxdie, “use small icons” only change the back button size, other buttons won’t be changed. No matter large icons mode or small icons mode, all these buttons will stick to the standard size of Mac world, width in 28 px and height in 22px with 1px height white shadow, and this height is higher than menu bar.
My thoughts is that buttons should look like menus in menu bar, standard buttons in navigation toolbar, bookmarks in bookmarks toolbar.
And please don’t hide the navigation toolbar if you have to combine these 2 bars, because there is an important gradient background start from menu bar to bookmarks toolbar, if the navigation toolbar is hided, the gradient looking breaks, especially on Firefox 4, it plays a more important role…

I tried to install the latest version of Foxdie today, but it failed. I’m using Firefox 3.6.8, and trying to download Foxdie 3.6.4. Before it finishes installing it gives me this message:

I am using foxdie with HideCaption to remove the caption bar and show the “traffic lights” in the corner of menu toolbar. This has worked perfectly until the latest update, when the traffic lights got replaced by _ [] X set. I didn’t find any option to get it back, is there any solution?
Another question is, can I make the buttons I placed on the menu toolbar rectangular? I have relocated google toolbar widgets there, and they don’t look quite right. This worked fine a couple of foxdie versions back.

Issue resolved by completely uninstalling Firefox, along with all my personal data: customization, passwords, cookies, bookmarks. I think the problem lied within the Java Console extensions in Firefox. There was nothing I could do to remove the Java extensions. I tried deleting them, and uninstalled the Java app to see if it did any good, but it didn’t. The Java Console extensions just re-appeared every single time. So with a very fresh install of Firefox, Foxdie works once again!

The problem is, those are no ordinary buttons: their captions contain the keywords used in google search that brough the page up. Having them without a caption is meaningless, moving them to another toolbar means needing one more toolbar.
I do not mean to ask you changing your ideas about foxdie look and feel, but maybe you can tip me where to find the relevant CSS, i’ll patch it myself just for me
